I am passionate about traffic safety and enthusiastically support any and all initiatives to address speeding cars on our roads and in our neighbourhoods. I was very pleased to attend the news conference announcing the Coquitlam RCMP “Project Scarecrow”.
The pilot of this Coquitlam RCMP program will be launched for 2 months and then assessed with respect to effectiveness. Three metal, life size and very realistic looking cutouts of a Traffic Section member conducting radar enforcement will be placed on streets in Coquitlam with the idea that motorists will slow down. And, on select days, RCMP will actually be standing behind the cutout with their radar gun.
I think this is a great idea and I look forward to hearing the results of the pilot. Coquitlam is the first detachment in BC and most likely Canada to implement this concept.
Sincere commendations to everyone involved in this important project. Driver behaviour, including speed, is a concern I hear about all throughout our community and I’m hopeful that initiatives such as Project Scarecrow will help address the issue.
