Every City Councillor serves six weeks in an “Acting Mayor” role and some of us, while “acting”, also honour a duty with respect to Council’s Adopt-a-Street responsibilities around City Hall. I have been in this role since August 15 and have been performing Litter Duty on segments of Pinetree and Guildford. Although I do pick up litter beyond the boundaries of our adopted area, while I was out in mid-September I thought that perhaps more could be done to keep our City Centre clean.
So I organized an event! I sought out individuals who could spare a bit of time to come out and help clean up the area around City Hall and Glen Park. It was fantastic! It was a beautiful sunny day and in 2 hours, seven of us collected 4 huge bags of garbage and hundreds (perhaps thousands) of littered cigarette butts.
There was also lots of enthusiasm from people who wanted to join in but weren’t able to – so I plan on hosting these types of events throughout the year. If helping to clean up our city with supplied bags, tongs and gloves (and maybe some goodies too!) appeals to you, please stay tuned!
A sincere thank you to everyone who expressed interest and to the great crew who spent some of their gorgeous Saturday helping to keep beautiful Coquitlam, beautiful.
